In 2005, three members of the Church of Chris Martin travelled from Scotland to the Glastonbury Festival, in an attempt to meet their Messiah before Coldplay’s headline slot. This is their story…
William Willett was the inventor of daylight saving time, and the great-great-grandfather of Coldplay frontman Chris Martin. Riding his horse early one summer morning, he noticed that most houses still had their blinds down, and the idea for daylight saving time occurred to him.
Lights go out and I can’t be saved
Tides that I tried to swim against
You’ve put me down upon my knees
Oh I beg, I beg and plead
In 1907 William self-published a pamphlet “The Waste of Daylight”, in which he petitioned that clocks should be advanced by 80 minutes in the summer. The evenings would then remain light for longer, increasing daylight recreation time and also saving lighting costs.
Come out of things unsaid, shoot an apple off my head
Trouble that can’t be named, tigers waiting to be tamed (singing)
You are, you are
Willett campaigned vigourously, and made several unsuccessful attempts to his pioneering idea passed into law. Only with the outbreak of the First World War was the idea taken seriously, primarily because of the need to save coal. Confusion never stops, closing walls and ticking clocks
Come back and take you home, I could not stop, that you now know
Come out upon my seas, curse missed opportunities
Am I a part of the cure, or am I part of the disease?
Germany had already introduced the scheme when the bill was finally passed in Britain on May 17, 1916 and the clocks were advanced by an hour on the following Sunday.
And nothing else compares…
William Willett did not live to see daylight saving become law, as he died of influenza in 1915 at the age of 58. He is commemorated in Petts Wood by a memorial sundial, set permanently to daylight saving time.
We seem to have been having some problems with our RSS feed of late. Something to do with Feedburner, I think - those who had subscribed have been getting small business reviews in Italian. But it’s fixed now.

Maybe you’d consider joining our Facebook group too - just click here.
And if that’s not enough, you can hear more of the Cold Mountain Singers at this Myspace page.
Right, I’m off to listen to the new album!

Chris Martin has revealed that on September 10th, 2001, he was contacted by a man claiming to represent the CIA, and told to fly.
“Flying is perfectly safe,” the man said, “In fact, being on the ground might be dangerous right now. You should fly as much as possible.”
The CIA is known to take an interest in pop musicians, especially those with leftist agendas. John Lennon, for example, was under constant surveilance throughout the seventies. Coldplay may have come to their attention due to their pacifist leanings, and the strong anti-war message of their lyrics. Furthermore, many of their songs include anti-capatalist lyrics, which to the CIA is the same as if they had done a cover of “The Red Flag”.
Some other hidden Communist messages the CIA might have heard in Coldplay songs -
Yellow - a hymn to Chairman Mao
In My Place - everyone has a place in the Communist shangri-la!
We Never Change - the cyclical nature of time according to dialectical materialism
Viva La Vida - in support of the Nicaraguan Sandanistas and their resistance to US economic and military incursion
Politik - note the “Russian” spelling
Yet the CIA have denied this call, and in fact, all foreknowledge of the World Trade Centre attacks. So who made the call?
In 2001, Parachutes, Coldplay’s debut album, wasn’t selling too well. EMI had given them a massive six-album deal, and were starting to panic that they might lose their money completely. What if an executive high up in the company was forewarned, and saw a way out of a financial bind?
Chris Martin did not fly that fateful day, and thank God, because if he had, he would not have been able to write all those songs which have enriched our lives so much. The only high flying he did was in the pop charts.
