William Willett was the inventor of daylight saving time, and the great-great-grandfather of Coldplay frontman Chris Martin. Riding his horse early one summer morning, he noticed that most houses still had their blinds down, and the idea for daylight saving time occurred to him.
Lights go out and I can’t be saved
Tides that I tried to swim against
You’ve put me down upon my knees
Oh I beg, I beg and plead
In 1907 William self-published a pamphlet “The Waste of Daylight”, in which he petitioned that clocks should be advanced by 80 minutes in the summer. The evenings would then remain light for longer, increasing daylight recreation time and also saving lighting costs.
Come out of things unsaid, shoot an apple off my head
Trouble that can’t be named, tigers waiting to be tamed (singing)
You are, you are
Willett campaigned vigourously, and made several unsuccessful attempts to his pioneering idea passed into law. Only with the outbreak of the First World War was the idea taken seriously, primarily because of the need to save coal.
Confusion never stops, closing walls and ticking clocks
Come back and take you home, I could not stop, that you now know
Come out upon my seas, curse missed opportunities
Am I a part of the cure, or am I part of the disease?
Germany had already introduced the scheme when the bill was finally passed in Britain on May 17, 1916 and the clocks were advanced by an hour on the following Sunday.
And nothing else compares…
William Willett did not live to see daylight saving become law, as he died of influenza in 1915 at the age of 58. He is commemorated in Petts Wood by a memorial sundial, set permanently to daylight saving time.
Home, home, where I wanted to go…

‘Speed of Sound’ is Chris Martin’s Revelation, like St Paul in the Old Testament when he had the Apocalypse. The song starts with a person alone, looking for more, perhaps dreaming of stardom…
How long before I get in?
Before it starts, before I begin?
How long before you decide, or
Before I know what it feels like?
Where to, where do I go?
If you never try then you’ll never know
How long do i have to climb
Up on the side of this mountain of mine?
Moses revelation came up a mountain, and so did Mohammad’s.
Look up, I look up at night -
Planets are moving at the speed of light
Climb up, up in the trees -
Every chance that you get is a chance you seize.
Evolution?
How long am I gonna stand
With my head stuck under the sand?
I start before I can stop or
Before I see things the right way up?
Then the vision comes, a rush of sensations -
All that noise and all that sound,
All those places I have found,
He suddenly understands, yet cannot communicate it clearly to us. Unless we’ve had the experience ourselves, we cannot hope to understand what is beyond words -
And birds go flying at the speed of sound
To show you how it all began,
This is not really true - its impossible! Its a simile.
Birds came flying from the underground -
If you could see it then you’d understand.
Ideas that you’ll never find,
All the inventors could never design.
The buildings that you put up,
Japan and China all lit up.
A reference to Yellow?
A sign that I couldn’t read,
or a light that I couldn’t see.
Some things you have to believe,
When others are puzzles, puzzling me…
Some aspects of the vision remain unfathomable, despite the feeling of truth he gets from it -
All that noise and all that sound,
All those places I have found,
And birds go flying at the speed of sound,
To show you how it all began.
The image of the bird is the Holy Spirit, which is traditionally portrayed as a dove in religious art (picture the dove from the story of Noah’s Ark). The bird is the Holy Spirit, a message from the underground (his Subconscious mind)who tell him how his fame began - because he is a prophet!
Birds came flying from the underground,
If you could see it then you’d understand,
Oh when you see it then you’ll understand…
All those signs I knew what they meant,
Somethings you can’t invent -
Like Chocolate shoes or a sure-fire money-making idea or a cure for head cancer
Some get made, and some get sent - wah oo!
Some of us get born (made), but some are sent from above to carry God’s message to the world. Like Chris Martin, Jesus or David Icke etc etc.
Earth’s gone flying at the speed of sound,
To show you how it all began.
Birds came flying from the underground,
If you could see it then you’d understand,
I hope this illuminates you all, and if you don’t get it yet…
When you see it then you’ll understand…

It’s not just the song - many things which are YELLOW are GOOD THINGS!

Bananas - GOOD THING - but only if they’re Fair Trade!
Daffodils - GOOD THING - because they remind us that WE ALL LIVE IN A BEAUTIFUL WORLD.

Chinese People - Good thing - because of the affordable, high quality musical instruments they produce, such as Takamine and Paiste. Also, Racism is a BAD thing.
BUT WHY YELLOW”? |
Look at the stars
Look how they shine for you
And everything you do
Yeah they were all Yellow
I came along
I wrote a song for you
And all the things that you do
And it was called Yellow
So then I took my turn
Oh what a thing to have done
And it was all Yellow
Your skin
Oh yeah your skin and bones
Turn into something beautiful
You know you know I love you so
You know I love you so
I swam across
I jumped across for you
Oh what a thing to do
’cause you were all Yellow
I drew a line
I drew a line for you
Oh what a thing to do
And it was all Yellow
Your skin
Oh yeah your skin and bones
Turn into something beautiful
And you know
For you I’d bleed myself dry
For you I’d bleed myself dry
It’s true.

It’s obviously nothing to do with stars cos lots of them are red or blue and stuff, and anyway mostly white. Has it anything to do with it being CM’s fave colour? Or is it, as KERRANG! claimed, because the song is “pish”? No! - it’s because yellow is the colour of Jesus Christ!
The Christ, as presented by Christianity, is fundamentally an amalgam of two archetypes - Corn Gods, such as Adonis and Attis, and Sun Gods like Osiris or Mithra, all of whom are young men who die and are reborn. And both corn and the sun are yellow!
The sun is reborn at the winter solstice, the 25th of December, and the corn is resurrected in the spring. This is not a coincidence. Note also that the Christian Sabbath is on a SUNday, not Saturday as the Jewish is.It is another example of how Chris Martin builds up layers of Christian imagery in his lyrics to hint at his true mission - OUR SALVATION. Look at the song again - who “came along” and “took his turn” to tell Mankind to turn our mortal “skin and bone… into something beautiful” and divine? Who else was prepared to “bleed [themselves] dry” for the sake of Humanity?
(Answer - Jesus Christ.) |

Again taking “inspiration” from Radiohead, Coldplay released their new single free on the internet on Tuesday. Violet Hill is the first track to be released from Viva La Vida, and the first fruit of their sessions produced by Brian Eno, mastermind of U2’s Joshua Tree.
Musically, they’ve turned up the guitar and stuck 30 seconds of ambience on the front to make it long enough to be a single. This now means they are OFFICIALLY EDGY AND EXPERIMENTAL and NOT COMMERCIAL ANYMORE.
The key to understanding this song is to remember Jesus’s words upon the cross (according to Matthew and Mark, at least) - My Father, my Father, why have you forsaken me? As he dies upon the cross, Jesus asks God why he is being allowed to suffer. Likewise, in Violet Hill, Chris asks God why He still allows suffering in the world.
Violet Hill
Was a long and dark December
The long night of the soul, the darkness that has come upon the modern world.
From the rooftops I remember
As ever, Chris is looking down from on high, surveying the world. (See Gravity, Daylight.)
There was snow
White snow
Even in England, snow is ALWAYS white. Chris knows this (his parents are teachers). ITS A METAPHOR!
Clearly i remember
From the windows they were watching
While we froze down below
When the future’s architectured
By a carnival of idiots on show
You’d better lie low
The powers-that-be, a circus of idiots who control the world, watch us through CCTV, the internet etc. We are hiding below, powerless to change anything, frozen.
Don’t think there’s such a word as “architectured”, however.
If you love me
Won’t you let me know?
The song is a plea from Chris to God, asking for a sign. In X&Y, he recieved his vision from God, but in the four years inbetween, nothing has changed. Poverty is not History, AIDS is still rife, and Noel Edmunds is STILL on TV.
Was a long and dark December
A reference to Chris’s fave painter, Thomas Kinkade.
When the banks became cathedrals
And the fog
Became God
In the previous Dark Age, the Catholic Church grew to be the greatest single power in the Medieval World. Many within the Vatican saw its primary purpose to be the raising of wealth, not the glory of God.
This is Chris’s second direct mention of God in his lyrics. The first, God Put a Smile Upon Your Face, shows a man who has just realised the spiritual power of the universe. Violet Hill suggests a far more jaded point of view. He must be fighting with his wife or something.
Priests clutched onto bibles
And went out to fit their rifles
And the cross was held aloft
Millions were killed during the crusades. The Vatican was silent on the Holocaust. Noel Edmunds is STILL on the TV.
Bury me in honor
When i’m dead and hit the ground
A love back home unfolds
No idea.
If you love me
Won’t you let me know?
I don’t want to be a soldier
With the captain of some sinking ship
With snow, far below
In this incredibly layered metaphor, Chris says he will think for himself, refusing to adopt the values of CORRUPT LEADERS like George Bush who are like the Captains of a failing civilisation, as long as the people remain emotionally frozen subconsciously. You don’t get shit like that from Keane, do you?
So if you love me
Why’d you let me go?
I took my love down to Violet Hill
Violet Hill is a metaphor for the perfect world Chris has glimpsed in his visions. He tries to show us (”his love”) this world, what Jesus would have called “The Kingdom of Heaven”.
There we sat in snow
All that time she was silent still
The world is not ready. EXCEPT FOR THE CHURCH OF CHRIS MARTIN!
So if you love me
Won’t you let me know?
If you love me,
Won’t you let me know?

BEHOLD - THE LAMB OF GOD!
Bono seems to have predicted the coming of Chris Martin, just as John the Baptist predicted the coming of Jesus, the prophet before him. If you don’t believe me, read these lyrics and then SHUT UP!!!
I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For
I have climbed highest mountain
I have run through the fields
Only to be with you
Only to be with you
Saint Bono claims to have climbed the highest mountain. Yet Christ Martin asks “how long must I climb up this mountain of mine?” The mountain is OURSELFS, and if we think we can ever stop climbing, we are wrong.
I have run
He understands the importance of keeping fit. After all, obesity rates are rising.
I have crawled
I have scaled these city walls
These city walls
Only to be with you
The city walls are St. Bono’s confusion - “Confusion never stops, Closing walls and ticking clocks” (AROBTTH 5:3)
But I still haven’t found what I’m looking for
But I still haven’t found what I’m looking for
Saint Bono is looking for the new Messiah (Chris Martin). He will be “On a hilltop, On a sky-rise, Like a firstborn Child, Defeat darkness, Breaking daylight” (AROBTTH 6:4)
I have kissed honey lips
Felt the healing in her fingertips
It burned like fire
This burning desire
He is talking about the Sacred Feminine here. Like in Da Vinci’s Code. Chris Martin is not afrain of his femine side, saying he loves his wife and being all melodramatic, but he’s masculine as well, getting mad and kicking off at photographers and that.
I have spoke with the tongue of angel’s - (1 Corinthians 6:1)
I have held the hand of a devil
It was warm in the night
Chris Martin acnowledges his good and bad sides too - “When I counted up my demons, Saw there was one for everyday, With the good ones on my shoulder, I drove the other ones away.” (PARACHUTES 10:1) - but he has sent his bad ones AWAY, not snuggled up to them like some sorta weird pervert!
I was cold as a stone
But I still haven’t found what I’m looking for
But I still haven’t found what I’m looking for
I believe in the kingdom come
Hidden track on X&Y!
Then all the color’s will bleed into one
Bleed into one
This is Nelson Mandelas’ dream of a RAINBOW NATION. That RASISM IS WRONG is one of the Sacred Tenets of the Church of Chris Martin. It’s just really not on.
Saint Bono was a lot younger when he wrote this song, but he still looks good for 65. He probably does a lot of exercise.
Well yes I’m still running
You broke the bond’s and you
Loosed the chain’s
Carried the cross
Of my shame
Of my shame
You know I believed it
But Bono remains chained, powerless. He is not the one to loose ALL of our chains, release us from our shame. It is Chris Martin who carried the cross for us. This is true; Bono tells us ‘I believed it’.
But I still haven’t found what I’m looking for -
I still haven’t found what I’m looking for…

In my place, in my place
Were lines that I couldn’t change
The lines which he could not change are the lines of prophecy in some of the books in the Old Testament. These appear to predict a coming saviour, or messiah. While Christians believe that Jesus was this Messiah, Jews are still waiting.
I was lost, oh yeah
I was lost, I was lost
Amazing Grace, a traditional hymn - “I was lost but now am found, was blind but now I see.” Interestingly, it was the sweet sound of Coldplay that saved this wretch, too!
Crossed lines I shouldn’t have crossed
The Cross - need I say more? (Also remincent of Ghostbusters.)
I was lost, oh yeah.
Yeah, how long must you wait for it?
Not long. Chris, the Messiah, is with us TODAY. (The Jews are wrong.)
Yeah, how long must you pay for it?
Probably a reference to Christ throwing the money-changers from the Temple. However, some commentators have interprited this as a reference to the increasing popularity of peer-to-peer filesharing programs such as Napster & Kazaa.
Yeah, how long must you wait for it?
Depends on your internet connection, really.
Oh for it
I was scared, I was scared
To me, it sometimes seems that we all bear the scars of modern life. On a deeper level, Chris has been scared by the jags on the crown of thorns and the nails through His hands.
Tired and under prepared
But I wait for it
If you go, if you go
Leave me down here on my own
“Down here” is, of course, to Chris, the Earth. He is looking up to his heavenly home and pleading with God, his Father, to give Him a chance to SAVE UOR SOULS. Consider Christ’s words upon the cross - “My Father, why hast thou forsaken me?”
Then I’ll wait for you (yeah)
Sing it
Please, please, please
Come back and sing to me
To me, me
Come on and sing it out, now, now
Come on and sing it out, to me, me
Come back and sing it
In my place, in my place
Were lines that I couldn’t change
And I was lost, oh yeah,
And here we come to the true meaning of ALL of Coldplay’s songs - OH YEAH. Because while the government, our parents and schoolteachers all say NO to us, Chris affirms and says YEAH. We DO live in a beautiful world.
